Parent Information

Dear Parents:

Thank you for making Jiu Jitsu a part of your child’s life and for allowing us to be their instructors. It is exciting and inspiring to see their skills and confidence grow through their experience. Below is a list of reminders to help keep our youngest students safe, comfortable and ready to learn. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know.

Student Uniforms

  • Always wear a clean uniform and belt – we recommend washing gi and no-gi attire after every use.

  • All students should wear a t-shirt or compression type shirt under gi jacket at all times. This allows for no-gi instruction and games and makes modest students more comfortable.

Student Hygiene

Please remind your child(ren) to:

  • Use the bathroom before class begins

  • After using the bathroom: Always wash hands in restroom and clean hands with disinfectant

  • Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed and clean

  • Place band-aids on cuts and scratches (athletic tape over the top can help secure)

Help Reduce the Spread

of Illness

  • We ask that children stay home from class when they are ill and/or suffering from a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, runny nose, or loose cough. Students may return to class if they have been symptom free for 24 hours.

  • Students must stay home for 14 days if they have been exposed to COVID

Student Safety –

Drop Off / Pick Up Guidelines

  • If arriving before the class start time, parents must stay on site and supervise children at all times until class begins.

  • Lil Champs  (age 4-7): We ask that a responsible adult accompany their child into and out of the building. We do not want children to walk out the door without their responsible adult.

  • Champs  (age 8+): We ask that if you drop off child(ren) at the start of class, that they watch their child enter the front door. At the end of class, we ask you to get out of your cars, enter the building, and walk with child(ren) to car.

  • Please remind children to always check in with their member number at the front desk, and at the desk by the mats.

Disciplinary Actions

Impact Jiu Jitsu Salem tries to promote a strong work ethic in our students while maintaining a fun and healthy environment for them to feel safe in. Encouraging them to give their very best effort feeding them positive affirmations is our first priority. To not only promote discipline but to also maintain class structure certain guidelines must be in place and a level of focus will be required. If a student is acting out in any way a warning will be given and can usually be paired with 5 pushups or an activity of the coaches choosing. These warnings are usually quick and then followed with a “good job” and their back in action. Then the strike process begins.

  • Strike one is given after the student has already received a warning. If they can not focus and refrain from what actions they are doing then the coach will give them a strike and take them to the side off the mat. A harder physical activity will be assigned such as 25 burpees or an activity of the coaches choosing and a discussion will take place on the students actions that got them there. The student will go right back to class.

  • Strike two means the student is obviously having a hard time focusing and may need a timeout.  The same actions will happen again from strike one followed with a five minute timeout or until the coach feels it’s appropriate to return.

  • Strike three a student will receive if they choose to absolutely not comply or be a constant distraction hindering the other students in class. Strike three will have the same disciplinary actions as the first two strikes with the timeout extending until the end of class. The student will be asked to sit and watch the rest of class not being able to participate. They will not be eligible for game time at the end either. They will be expected however to line up and bow out at the end of class showing respect and being a good teammate.

Things that could result in a warning or a strike

  • Acting out. Having to keep being reminded to focus or to be quiet.

  • Not paying attention.

  • Goofing off and not trying our best when drilling with our partners.

  • Leaving the mat without asking. Students must ask to leave the mat for absolutely any reason. Restroom, water, or to talk with mom and dad. This is so our coaches can account for all students at all times.

  • Deliberately trying to be malicious or harmful to another student.

  • Not hustling when being asked to hustle. The definition of hustle is (to proceed or work rapidly and energetically.) When we ask a student to hustle we expect that student to move quickly and start showing more activity.

Parent Support

While parent involvement is crucial in fostering success, we ask that parents avoid sideline coaching during class. Beyond teaching Jiu Jitsu/Boxing  techniques, our instructors are working to develop students’ focus, respect for teachers and peers, and growth as team members. Allowing students to take part in class independently, and learning to respect the instructor’s cues to focus, will help foster this development.

We greatly appreciate and enjoy having your children learn Jiu Jitsu/Boxing  with us. Thank you for helping to keep our kids safe!
